Quencie Interviews Torres Strait Islander, and Tik Tok Creator Scottie Savage on Instagram Live [VIDEO]

scottie.jpg

It was so wonderful to interview Torres Strait Islander, Scottie Savage. I posted one of his Tik Tok videos to my Studio Q Facebook page and it garnered over 1 million views in less than 2 weeks. I decided to create an Instagram Live series to interview content creators who went viral on my page.

Aside from Scottie’s video going viral on my facebook page, I also wanted to interview him because of his deep connection to his ancestors and his culture. The dances featured in the viral videos are ones that honor his culture.

I was beyond impressed that someone so young would take the time to make others aware about their heritage in such a profound way. I also love the way Scottie honors his grandparents and showcased them in his social media content. His content both educates and entertains his audience all at the same time.

It was so cool to discuss Scottie’s culture live and direct from Australia. One of the great things about technology is being able to connect with people form all over the world and learn about them. I loved talking to Scottie so much that I immediately made him my internet nephew! I am so looking forward to his future. The way he shares his culture with the world is amazing and I hope is something he continues to do.

12 Years Ago Today, I was at Barack Obama's Inauguration

My view of The Capitol on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009

My view of The Capitol on Inauguration Day, January 20, 2009

The only inauguration I have ever been to was 12 years ago today for former president, Barack Obama. I am proud to say that I was one of the thousands of people in Washington D.C. to see the first black man be sworn in as president on January 20, 2009. I remember standing in the freezing cold on the phone with my mom and holding a picture of my great grandmother who passed away in 1995. This was so historic that I wanted them both to somehow be there to experience it with me. A phone call and photo would just have to do. It was such an amazing feeling to see a black man become president in these United States.

My great grandmother who passed away in 1995 would have loved to see a black man become president. The best I could do was bring a picture of her with me to witness the historic event. I’m sure her spirit was there.

My great grandmother who passed away in 1995 would have loved to see a black man become president. The best I could do was bring a picture of her with me to witness the historic event. I’m sure her spirit was there.

All the days leading up to the inauguration I wanted to be there but I had no ticket, no money and no intention of going. I was looking forward to watching it on the couch like most of America. What changed was my best friend, Tam, wrote to California Representative Howard Berman’s office for tickets. I dismissed her because there was no way in a million years she was going to actually be able to to secure tickets to an event of this magnitude. I was WRONG! She was placed in a lottery of over 240,000 people and actually won the tickets! What’s even crazier is she gave the tickets back because neither of us was in a financial position to make this trip. I can’t believe we were actually going to allow not having money prevent us from such a historic moment in our lifetime. How could we miss this day when she had won tickets that you couldn’t even buy!

So, three days later we came to our senses and Tam wrote back to Representative Howard Berman. Unfortunately, they had already given her tickets away to someone else. I mean she did give them back. What did we expect, right? We are talking about the first black president here. The idea that she even won them in the first place is unbelievable. But to give them back and still think they were going to be there waiting was absurd. Unless, that is, you believe in God! You see when God is involved the impossible becomes the possible.

1927792_1087433259133_5873_n.jpg

Even though the tickets had indeed been given away, the office said they had until 2 pm to claim them and if they didn't, he would give them back to Tam. At 2:05 pm, they called Tam and said that she could have the tickets back because no one claimed them. Look at God! This trip was meant for us to experience. How do you win two inauguration tickets in a lottery of over 240,000 people, give the tickets back, change your mind and then ask for the tickets back again. The final result being that you actually receive the tickets back! There is no explanation. That ain’t nothing but God.

Now that the inauguration tickets were re-secured we found room on our credit cards and booked our flights to Washington, D.C. The next hurdle was finding somewhere to stay. By this point every hotel was booked and there was no such thing as Airbnb back then. It would have most likely been way out of our price range anyway. Tam knew no one in Washington D.C. so, I immediately began to brainstorm. I have an aunt that lives in Washington D.C., plus a few friends, so I began my outreach for a warm place for us to stay.

My Aunt Ann

My Aunt Ann

The first friend I called said that she wouldn’t been in town and had already offered her condo up to others attending the inauguration. Strike one! When I called my next friend, she invited us before I could even ask. I was shocked, excited and grateful for her kindness. I called my aunt too and we ended up splitting the time between my friend’s and aunt’s house. I was beyond excited that I was able to secure housing for this last minute trip with just a few phone calls. God was definitely at work! This trip was meant to be.

When we got to Washington D.C., I was about that documentation life. I took photos and videos everywhere to commemorate each step of the journey. I even brought along my Studio Q mic to facilitate random on the spot interviews with people. When we went to the famous Ben’s Chili Bowl, I had so much fun interviewing the guy who waited on Obama. I had him recount the entire exchange with him and Obama like an announcer giving a play by play in a sports game.

The guy who waited on Obama when he dined at Ben’s Chili Bowl.

The guy who waited on Obama when he dined at Ben’s Chili Bowl.

I even ordered what President Obama had which was the half smoke chili dog and fries. The half smoke is a sausage that is half beef and half pork. It is prepared with chili, onions and mustard. I enjoyed it, but it couldn’t compete with the chili cheese dog I get from The Chili Parlor in my hometown. But at the moment none of that mattered I was having with the President had and so damn happy about it.

My first chili cheese hotdog from Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington D.C.

My first chili cheese hotdog from Ben’s Chili Bowl in Washington D.C.

We went to Ben’s Chili Bowl twice because the first time the line was just entirely too long. And it was just too cold to wait that long for a hotdog. So our first time around we opted for Quiznos. But when we made our way back with my Aunt Ann, we had the full Chili Bowl experience.

I was so thrilled to have such a once in a lifetime experience. I tear up just thinking about all that black people have had to endure just to arrive at this one amazing moment in time. We stand on the shoulders of giants. I know the spirit of the ancestors was right there with us. You could feel the magic in the air. No one had to say a word. We all knew we were experiencing something our ancestors could never imagine but we would never forget. There were no strangers at this inauguration. I felt everybody I saw was a kind neighbor or friend. We connected with all kind of awesome people while waiting in line to get our inauguration tickets. We even had the opportunity to meet Representative Howard Berman and take a picture with him in his office at The Capital building. It was because of Howard Berman that Tam even had the opportunity to win the tickets so, it was an honor to meet him.

I even met actor Wendell Pierce standing in line to get our inauguration tickets. He was waiting to get his tickets too. On this day, I felt we were all the same, celebrity or not. We all were just happy to witness history together. It was one of the most memorable days of my life!

IMG_9499.jpg

The only bad parts of the day were the freezing cold weather, overcrowded subways and those nasty porta pottys that we were forced to use since we were all outdoors. Until this trip, I never knew hand warmers even existed! You put them inside of your gloves and it literally warms your hands.. Genius invention for the kind of freezing cold we were in.

1927792_1087432819122_3387_n.jpg

Also, I don’t think Washington D.C. was equipped for so many subway riders at one time. They had closed certain stops, so people had to get off and walk further. It was a mess! The people in the subway were screaming, "Let Us Out!" We were stuck in there for at least an hour! And because I worked The Olympic Games when it came to Atlanta in 1996, I had something to compare it to. I was shocked that things didn’t run as smoothly as the Olympics, especially since an inauguration happens like clockwork every four years. Plus the whole world knew this was a historic event so, I expected the transportation system to run a lot smoother than it did. But in retrospect, those were all minor distractions to the monumental history we all witnessed. I felt privileged to be there. And to think that we almost didn’t go, makes me even more grateful.

As we count down the hours to the end of the horrible Trump administration and prepare for the inauguration of Joe Biden as President of The United States and Kamala Harris as the first black woman to be sworn in as Vice President, I was compelled to reflect back on my 2009 inauguration experience.

With the history of slavery in our country you would think that the election of Barack Obama would be what incited violence. But nope! It was a completely peaceful time leading up to his inauguration. It took Donald Trump and his supporters to change all that. Now Washington D.C. has to be surrounded by thousands of armed guards just to ensure a peaceful transfer of power.

When he incited those domestic terrorists and white supremacist to storm the capitol on January 6, 2021, he encouraged the worst of America to rise up and prevail, if only for a moment. This is something that has never happened before. I feel it was a culmination of the worst presidential administration America has ever had to live through. Not to mention this is all going down in the midst of a global pandemic, which has taken the lives of over 400,000 people!

Everyone in this country has either had Coronavirus, knows someone who has had it, or known people who have died from it. I don’t know how we as a country have survived Donald Trump. I’m just glad at 12 noon on January 20, 2021, we don’t have to anymore. This nightmare is officially over.

As I look forward to a new chapter with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris, I am as hopeful as I was during Barack Obama’s inauguration 12 years ago. It’s a new day, again and I’m glad I’m here to see it. Scroll down and press play to relive a video compilation of my inauguration experience on this day 12 years ago. It’s a day I will never forget. Press play and see why.

Behind The Photo: Just 10 Seconds Oprah!

I have met Oprah 4 times in my life but this is the only picture I have to prove it.

I have met Oprah 4 times in my life but this is the only picture I have to prove it.

My journey to meeting Oprah Winfrey all started with my dream interview experience with Whitney Houston. It was after watching one of her awe-inspiring shows that I gained the confidence to finally send in my video submission to MTV’s show FANatic. “God can dream a bigger dream than you!” was the Oprah quote that seemed to embody my moment with Whitney. When the show aired on MTV, my family hovered around the TV like it was the Super Bowl. The excitement in the room was so high that it literally gave me goose bumps. When the show started, I stared at the TV with my mouth agape. I couldn’t believe that this really happened and seeing it replay before my very eyes again was like night and day. You can describe what you remembered, but it is hard to truly find the words to express the emotion that came from watching yourself interact with Whitney Houston. To be sitting in the same room where I waited hours just to catch one of Whitney’s new videos on MTV left me speechless. Twelve years later, I’m waiting to see myself with Whitney Houston on MTV. It was truly a full circle moment.

The phone rung off the hook throughout the entire interview—my friends and family were calling frantically to speak to me. But I sat frozen in amazement. The nervous shake in my hands was the only movement from my body. Was the girl laughing with Whitney, talking with Whitney, hugging Whitney really me? I was so shocked I couldn’t even cry. Everyone in the house was dead silent, that is, until the first commercial came on. Next, all you could hear was screams.

“Oh my God! That was you and Whitney.” My sister said jumping up out of the chair.

“Yes that was you!” My mom screamed as she ran over to hug me.

“This is so good.” My brother said. “I can’t believe that’s actually you.”

“I love it!” One of my cousins screamed. “And you don’t have to guess what family you come from either. You are as loud and crazy as all of us. Just like you are around here.”

Right then, the commercials were over and the interview came back on.

My mom said, “Shhh everybody! It’s back on.” My mom said shaking both hands by her lips.

We all witnessed the remainder of my dream interview with Whitney and talked the rest of the evening about how blown away we all were that it really happened. Everyone was really happy for me. When the house cleared and it was time to go to bed, I stayed up and watched the tape of that interview over and over again. It was hard for me to digest my 12 year journey in the twelve minutes shown on MTV. Days, weeks and months later, MTV played re-runs of the interview. People seemed to recognize me everywhere I went. I had no idea how big MTV really was until I went traveling different places and found out people would still recognize me from my MTV moment.

The brief Whitney fame I had was enjoyable. For the first time I got to understand the true scope of Whitney’s legendary status through unexpected encounters with die hard Whitney fans online and in person. Fans would walk up to me randomly and talk about how long they too have loved Whitney Houston. I slowly began to realize that I wasn’t Whitney Houston’s number one fan at all. I was one of the hundreds of thousands of self-proclaimed number one Whitney fans that surrounded the globe.

As I would listen to other fans I would quietly think, Wow! They love Whitney just as much as I do. I am blessed that I was even chosen, it could have so easily been one of them. Where were they when I was fifteen? My Whitney journey was lonely. I can’t believe I thought I was the only number one fan, but I did. Listening to other fans made me feel even more grateful for my experience.

In addition to becoming aware of all of Whitney’s fans, I also started to receive many invitations to speak at high schools, churches and youth organizations about never giving up on your dreams. My experience was not just mine anymore. It was now a tool for me to help encourage others to follow their dreams. It blew my mind to see people be inspired to go after their dream just because I went after mine. This new truth made me want to thank anyone who was even remotely involved in making my dream come true. And at the top of my list was none other than media mogul, Oprah Winfrey. I felt like I just had to thank Oprah. But I didn’t want to write or email Oprah because that just seemed too impersonal. I wanted to thank her in person, for reigniting the hope in my dream. I just had to figure out how little ole me was going to get to Oprah Winfrey.

I decided that the best way for me to see her in person was to travel to Chicago and attend one of her show tapings at Harpo Studios. It took me a couple of weeks to get through those busy Oprah phone lines, but when I did, I secured my friend and I a seat in the audience. My plan was to get Oprah’s attention for ten seconds. In those ten seconds, I would thank her for inspiring me to manifest my dream moment with Whitney Houston.

On April 20, 1999, I entered Harpo Studios for an Oprah Winfrey Show taping. As soon as I took a seat in the audience, I sent up a quick prayer. God please let Oprah give me ten seconds, even if she doesn’t know why. As always, God delivered! I recommend always making room for God. During one of the show’s commercial breaks, I summoned the courage to put up ten fingers in front of Oprah’s face. The only reason she even saw me was because I was literally sitting three rows from the front, dead center. She couldn’t miss seeing me if she tried. Where I was sitting was no coincidence. I had persuaded Oprah’s audience supervisor, David Gloor, to sit me this close. After a little begging and prodding, he agreed and sat my friend and I in seats right in front of Oprah!

Oprah looked me right in the eyes and said, “Ten what?”

I couldn’t believe she was actually speaking to me. I knew I had better not half step with the queen of talk. I had to speak up and I HAD TO DO IT NOW!

“Ten seconds I would like to have with you before the show is over.” I quickly replied. Oprah smiled, nodded and went on with the show. I’m sure she has a heard some of everything from people in her audience over the twenty-five years she did her show. I didn’t know if this was her way of saying no, yes or maybe later. And since I’m an optimist at heart, I convinced myself that Oprah meant we would talk later. Don’t laugh or roll your eyes! It’s what I really told myself. When the taping was finally over, I was eager for my ten seconds with Oprah. Unfortunately, after thanking everyone for coming to the show, Oprah was on her way out of the studio. Before she turned around to leave, I was able to make eye contact with her. She caught my desperate puppy dog look out the corner of her eye.

Oprah looked at me and said “I gotta go (pointing at her watch), I can’t stay. I have to get ready for the second show.” She then smiled and turned around to leave.

Before she could take one step I said, “Uh, uh Oprah.” Talk about making a daring moment even more intense. The people in the studio were so quiet. Everyone heard me. I could see some of Oprah’s employees side eye me like, “Who does she think she is to stop Oprah from leaving her own studio?” But I was relentless. I had to block out the frightening silence and the hostile side eyes to focus on the reason I had even come, which was to thank Oprah. And that’s exactly what I planned to do.

Oprah looked at me again and said, “I just can’t stay. I really must go.”

“Oprah please.” I said looking at her like she would be literally killing me if she took one step away from me. “Ten seconds is all I need.”

“Alright then.” She said. “Go ahead then.

“What! Did I really just convince Oprah to actually listen to me. This had God written all over it, because in no way did she want to stop and listen to me. But my prayer was for to give me 10 seconds even if she didn’t know why. And that’s exactly what happened.

Oprah then walked back to her big yellow chair on the set and sat down to listen to me. Although the show was technically over as soon as I began to speak there was a camera person at my feet, pointing his lens into my face. My only thought was, Quencie, this better be good. You better have your act together to stop Lady O from leaving.

The spirit was indeed with me because everything I wanted to tell Oprah came rolling off my tongue without any hesitation. My ten seconds turned into ten minutes, which perhaps was Oprah’s fear in the first place. When I was finished thanking her for the show that inspired me to hold onto my dreams, out of nowhere the audience erupted in applause. I was not expecting that kind of love from Oprah’s audience, especially when they were supposed to be on their way out. Afterwards, Oprah came over to where I was sitting and gave me a big hug. I gave her a picture of me and Whitney with the words “You Will Win, When you Believe” written at the bottom. Oprah smiled and read the words out loud.

“You will win, when you believe. Fantastic!” Oprah said. “This picture is too cute.”

“Thank you Oprah.” I replied.

“You’re most welcome.” she said.

I left Harpo studios walking on sunshine. I thanked God the whole way home. This encounter taught me don’t give up 5 minutes before the miracle, which is something I have heard Iyanla Vanzant say many, many times. If I had accepted Oprah’s first rejection, well that just would have been the end of it. She was literally on her way out of the studios. I wasn’t rude, but I was persistent and most of all I didn’t give up. Nothing at all looked like I would get what I got.

But instead, she stopped and gave me more than the ten seconds I had asked for. Oprah proved once again her quote to be true. “God can dream a dream bigger than you!”

This was not the first time I met Oprah, but it was the first time I stopped her from leaving her own studio to talk to me. I have met Oprah a total of four times in my life but, I only have one picture to prove it. All of my encounters hail from the audience of The Oprah Winfrey Show and her Life Class show on OWN.

My first Oprah encounter dated back to when I was in my first or second year of college. I went with a teacher who I had become friends with during my last years in high school. She taught me how to drive a stick shift so that I could help her make that 4 hour drive to Chicago from Springfield to attend the show taping. It still remains the only time I have ever driven a stick shift! We even got stopped by the police during our midnight practice session. I literally learned how to drive her car over a couple of hours. Looking back, I can’t believe we didn’t crash with me behind the wheel.

When we finally attended the show taping, we both were beyond excited. We sat in a section at the far left end of the studio. We were basically behind Oprah’s shoulder, which was close but not in a good way. I can’t remember what the topic of the show was but I quickly raised my hand when Oprah opened the floor for audience questions. Oprah’s producers immediately came over to find out what my question was. I guess it was their job to determine if it was worthy enough to even ask. When they heard my question, they directed me to go stand at the microphone to eventually ask it to Oprah. When I finally got to the mic, Oprah looked at me and said we are running out of time and we are not going to get to you. I put my hands up like what! My body language and facial expressions inspired the audience in the section I was sitting in to moan in disapproval. “Did you turn the whole section against me?” Oprah asked. We all laughed. She then came over to where I was and gave me a hug. I gave her an envelope, which included a short note and picture of me. I don’t have a picture of this moment with Oprah, but Oprah Winfrey actually spoke to me and gave me a hug during my first ever visit to her show. Epic!

The third time I met Oprah was in 2011. It was the last season of The Oprah Winfrey Show and I attended a taping that was all about Best Friends. Oprah’s best friend Gayle King was the only guest, and the audience was filled with best friends. For the first time ever, I had no parts in making this happen. My best friend Tam had never been to a taping of The Oprah Winfrey Show and wanted to attend at least one show before it was all over. She found out there was going to be a special taping and the show was looking for only best friends. Tam wrote a letter about our friendship and all the things that made us best friends. Based on her letter, the show reached out and said we were selected to attend the show. We were super excited! I’m pretty sure there were thousands of people that wrote in, but her letter was actually chosen. We flew to Chicago with the excitement of two school girls going to Disneyland. Even though I had been to The Oprah Winfrey Show, you couldn’t tell it by my enthusiasm. It was as if I had never been. Nothing about this experience was old had for me.

When we finally made it to Harpo Studios, we took all kind of photos to memorialize our experience. After we wrapped up our mini photo shoot and crossed the street to get in the Oprah line, we ran into Oprah’s Executive Producer Sheri Salata. I can’t believe we got to take a picture with the lady who was responsible for managing Oprah’s team behind the scenes. The finale shows that Sheri Salata produced for Oprah at The United Center were iconic, so I was honored that we got this chance meeting with her.

We had a ball throughout this entire experience. From standing in line, to talking to other Oprah audience members, to actually sitting three rows back from Oprah right in the center. Yes we were that close! I couldn’t believe how much pixie dust was around us. It was like angels orchestrated our flow. Everything just fell into place. The show was all about best friends, and Oprah and Gayle shared all kind of experiences they shared as friends. It was a fun time.

After the show was over, Oprah and Gayle stayed and spoke to the audience for about 30 to 40 minutes. During this time period, different audience members raised their hands to ask Oprah and Gayle questions. We had no idea that Oprah would entertain questions, but since I was an interviewer, I was going to have one ready regardless. I practiced the perfect question for days. The plan was for me to raise my hand and ask my question. Since I was literally right in front of Oprah, this would be easy, right? Or so I thought. I raised my hand to get Oprah’s attention, but I was unsuccessful. Each time I raised my hand, she called on other people, so I said forget it. So, Tam was like…uh uh Oprah (in her head). She waited until Oprah looked in our direction and raised her hand at the right moment. Oprah immediately called on Tam. When Oprah pointed at Tam to speak, Tam said, “my best friend has a question.” Then turned her entire body to me. So, when I tell you I had no parts of making this happen, I mean no parts!

After Tam said that, Oprah immediately looked at me for the question. I was so nervous that I stumbled the question, but was finally able to get it out. What was so cool about my question was that, not only did Oprah address it, but Gayle jumped in and gave her two cents too. Their answer went on for over 6 minutes. No other question asked that day yielded that kind of engagement. I was so elated by that!

I found out later that my question and Oprah’s answer had been posted to Oprah.com. Wow! After meeting Oprah twice with nothing to show for it there’s now a whole video of me asking Oprah a question! In my mind, this was my Oprah interview. Lol! And to think for a good while I didn’t even know this existed. I knew it happened because I was there, but to see it on video was a whole other thing! If it were not for my friend’s sister, Triska, who tagged me on Facebook with the video, I still would not know! I completely freaked out when I saw it. I am still so grateful that she shared that video with me.

Having the opportunity to ask Oprah Winfrey a question was my major highlight from the show. But I had no idea what was yet to come. Oprah gifted the entire audience with a two-day experience at The Miraval Spa in Arizona. It’s one of the best spas in the world and one of Oprah’s favorites. It’s the same one she and Gayle went to several years ago and filmed an episode of The Oprah Winfrey Show. But the awesomeness didn’t stop there. Oprah made sure we all had roundtrip flights, roundtrip car service from the airport to the spa and pajamas!!! She thought of everything and provided it to us all for FREE. What an amazing experience. In one day, I got to ask Oprah a question and leave her show with a trip to a world class spa. I was so grateful! I have seen Oprah give away amazing gifts to people on her show for the 20 plus years that I watched it, but I never thought I would ever be the receiver of any.

Once Tam and I decided that we would go to the spa on Memorial Day Weekend, I immediately tweeted Oprah. When I tweeted Oprah she had about 5 million followers ( she now has 43 million followers) and I was like Oprah is never gonna see my tweet. Well, Oprah not only saw my tweet but she replied to it.

miravaltweet.jpg

When Tam saw that Oprah actually replied to my tweet she immediately tweeted her too. And guess what? Oprah replied to her tweet too!. Tam had sent Oprah a thank you gift for the trip and wanted to see if she had received it. Actually, we both asked if she had received it. Oprah rarely used Twitter so for her to even be on the app when we tweeted was a miracle. But then to respond to both of us was back to back was mind blowing.

Tam and I had an amazing time at The Miraval Spa! We even saw Ellen DeGeneres and her wife Portia there. Now you know you are at a swanky place when Ellen is staying there the same weekend you are. I will always be so grateful to Oprah for this gift. Not sure I would have ever experienced a weekend like this without her. It was memorable and amazing.

When Oprah replies to one of your tweets you never forget it. Afterwards, I started to regularly live tweet during my favorite programs on her new channel, The Oprah Winfrey Network (OWN). This lead to a few of my tweets finding their way in promos on OWN.

Yes, you read that right! My tweets jumped from my Twitter timeline to my TV screen. I had tweets featured in a promo for the following shows: Oprah’s Next Chapter, Iyanla’s Fix My Life and Super Soul Sunday! It was crazy seeing my tweets on TV. It was definitely an honor that they were featured on OWN. It made me feel apart of the shows that I really loved and supported.

My Tweet Reads: @IyanlaVanzant is doing great TV @Oprah thank you got knowing that and putting her on @OWNTV

My Tweet Reads: @IyanlaVanzant is doing great TV @Oprah thank you got knowing that and putting her on @OWNTV

I was even contacted to live tweet for a few shows on OWN one Saturday night. I took over the @Owners twitter handle and had so much fun leading the conversation with fellow fans. Social media enabled my Oprah connection to continue. Most of us didn’t grow up with social media, so this was beyond exciting. At one time all we could do was talk back to the TV screen now we can actually tweet the star!

Who knew my Oprah journey would include Twitter takeovers and a trip to a world class spa - But it did!

My last Oprah encounter was at a live taping of her show Life Class! This time, I was the one who wrote to the show and somehow secured two seats for Tam and I to attend the taping. This show was being taped in LA, so we didn’t have to hop on a plane to Chicago like last time. It was taped in the lunch area of the OWN offices, so the audience was much smaller than the one at Harpo Studios. When Tam and I arrived at the taping, we hung out in a waiting room before being seated in the audience. Not long after we entered the room, I looked up and saw Arianna Huffington. Pretty fancy audience this is, I thought to myself. Later that day, Arianna Huffington actually served the audience snacks. I feel like only at an Oprah event would you look up and see something like that.

We were the last to be seated in the audience but that turned out to be a great thing. I thought for sure we would be sitting somewhere way in the back but, do you know they directed us to the first row! We not only sat up front but we sat right next to Oprah’s sister, Patricia Lofton.

Tam, Patricia Lofton (Oprah’s sister) and me

Tam, Patricia Lofton (Oprah’s sister) and me

When the show started, we were less than 12 feet away from both Oprah Winfrey and Iyanla Vanzant who was her guest for the show. No one could have predicted this awesomeness but we were here for it. I was able to give Oprah a small present before the show started. It is my all time favorite pen. When I gave it to her, Oprah immediately said “Is this a Uniball?” “Yes!” I squealed that she knew what brand it was. I mean how did she know this? I had taken it out of the wrapper so she could actually use it in the show if she needed to so she didn’t see the wrapper. I was so freaked out she predicted the brand of pen before I could even tell her. Great minds think alike! She held the pen throughout the whole episode. You would have thought I bought her a new car the way I beamed with pride watching her hold that pen from my seat.

a candid shot I took of Iyanla and Oprah before taping began.

a candid shot I took of Iyanla and Oprah before taping began.

During one of the commercial breaks, I was able to somehow get Oprah’s attention. I basically asked her for a picture after the show was over without uttering a word. I mouthed my ask using eye contact and hand gestures to communicate what I wanted. Oprah got it immediately and nodded her head yes to me. It was like a secret between she and I. I don’t think anyone else saw our exchange, but it happened. I was quiet and very discreet. But just like with the pen, Oprah got it immediately! She understood exactly what I was asking for and agreed to it. I was going crazy on the inside asking myself, did you really just communicate with Oprah right now? You did! You did!

At some point during this show, I was supposed to ask a question. The producers had spoken to me beforehand, but due to time constraints they didn’t get to me. Unlike years before, I was pretty happy that they ran out of time. It was a very deep show and I was relieved that my participation only included listening. Once the show wrapped, everyone from the back of the audience started filing out. I kept my eyes on Oprah because she had silently promised me that we could take a photo. Well, promise may be pushing it, but she did nod yes!

When it was finally time for us to leave I quickly turned to Oprah with a look of desperation. You know the look you give your parents when they forgot that they promised you McDonald’s on the way home form school? The only thing that came out of my mouth while looking at Oprah was But….. Oprah saw me and did not miss a beat. She motioned her hand for me and Tam to come over to where she was. One of her employees who had been trying to usher us out ended up taking the picture of us. I was so freaking happy! I had met Oprah a total of four times, but this was the only time I could prove it.

Do you know how many celebrities who are nowhere near Oprah’s media maven status would never do what she did. I’ll give you a hint: Most of them! All of my experiences with Oprah included her giving me a moment. We all know this is Oprah Winfrey for goodness sake she ain’t got to do nothing she don’t want to do. My encounters span a few decades so I can truly say she never changed up. And by never hanged up I mean always kind. I believe with her you get exactly what you see. Thank you Oprah! I am grateful I got to even have one moment with you, let alone all that I have shared in this blog.

This the only pic I have with Oprah so I’m going to share it twice!

Behind The Interview: Episode 1 Featuring R & B Singer, Monica [VIDEO]

monica-4.JPG

Welcome to the first episode of my new series Behind The Interview. In this series, I will share the backstory of how I secured an interview with a celebrity. Some may think I may have a Hollywood hook up, but nope! God has been my booking agent from the very beginning.

Watch my first episode of how I interviewed Monica below. You can also scroll down and read the play by play of how it all went down.

Back in 1999, I heard on the radio that singer Monica was coming to perform in my hometown as a part of the Nickelodeon ‘All That’ Tour. I was already on a huge high because I had just attended a Whitney Houston concert in Chicago a few weeks earlier.

The first thing that came to my mind when I heard the radio promo was: Wouldn’t it be great if I could interview Monica when she came to town? Why not? I thought. I can at least try.

That day, I called Matt Dietrich, the Arts & Entertainment editor of the local newspaper to see if he could give me the contact information I needed to secure the interview. Matt and I had met after he saw my interview with Whitney Houston on an MTV show called Fanatic. He wrote a great cover story article about my journey to Whitney, and as a result we established a great rapport with each other.

When we spoke, he was extremely helpful and gave me the information I was seeking.

Before we hung up he said, “Let me know if you do get the interview with Monica. I would be willing to publish it.”

“Really?” I asked.

“Sure,” he said.

“I will get right on it, and see what I come up with.” I replied.

“Keep me posted.” He said as we hung up.

After I hung up with Matt, I called Stan Washington, my friend and editor of The Atlanta Voice. When we spoke, I told him how excited I was about my possible interview with Monica. He looked at his schedule of events and said, “Monica will be performing in Atlanta soon too and I would also like to run the interview if you get it.”

“Really?” I asked shocked for the second time in a row.

“Yes, really.” He said. “Call me when you know something.”

This was bizarre. In a matter of a couple of hours, I had two editors interested in an interview I wanted to do after hearing a radio promotion. What is strange is I almost never listen to the radio in my hometown because none of them have an urban format, yet here I was being informed that an R&B artist was coming to town. This interview had to be meant to be.

When I finally called the publicist at the record label, I was told that I would have to set up the interview with Monica’s manager. Right after she gave me the number, I hung up and quickly reached out to Monica’s manager.

She said, “You don’t have to wait until Monica’s performance. I can set up a phone interview in a couple of days.”

“That would be great.” I said.

She then told me the day and time Monica would be available to do the interview. When I hung up I sat quietly in amazement at how quickly thoughts can become things. Normal procedure for securing an interview with an artist could include faxing requests, back and forth phone calls that could go unanswered, and waiting for approvals via email. And this still wouldn’t guarantee that you’ll get an interview. None of that applied to my scenario. Everything happened so quickly that all those steps were eliminated from my process. With just a few phone calls, I had secured an interview with Grammy award winning artist, Monica.

The day I interviewed Monica was great. I asked her all about touring, family and winning her first Grammy, which she shares with singer Brandy for the song, The Boy is Mine. Before we completed the interview, I sincerely thanked Monica on behalf of music fans everywhere for taking time out to do the MTV show Fanatic simply because of how much it meant to me during my experience as a fan on the show.

“It means so much for everyday music fans to meet and thank the people you have always looked up to.” I said.

“You know I really enjoyed doing that show.” Monica said. “It is always great to meet the people who really support you and your music. I love to meet my fans and let them know I am human just like them. I feel that anyone with determination can do the same things I am doing. By the way who did you get a chance to meet on the show?” Monica asked.

“Whitney Houston!” I said excitedly.

“You know what?” She questioned. “I was with Whitney when that came on. Didn’t you have braids?”

Oh My God, I thought. But I wanted to scream. Monica saw the show with Whitney! Calm down Quencie, I said to myself, calm down.

“Yes that was me.” I said trying hard to suppress my shock.

“You sure do have a laugh on you.” Monica said jokingly.

“Oh I know.” I said trying even harder to cover up how stunned I was to be hearing this from her. “But I can’t help it. I come by it naturally. “

Monica chuckled and said, “I’ll have to tell Nip I spoke to you.”

“Please tell her I said hello.” I said.

As soon as we hung up I screamed, jumped up and down then immediately focused all of my energy and excitement into the article about Monica. A few weeks later when Monica came to town, she and her people were thrilled to find out that the article I did on her was featured on the front page of the entertainment section. To be honest, I was shocked too. I had no idea when I did the interview that the editor would put it on the front page. The only other time anything I did was on the front page was when I interviewed Whitney Houston. So, this was beyond cool.

I went to the show and absolutely loved Monica’s performance. To date, it’s still the only time I have ever seen her perform live in concert. I don’t remember having to buy a ticket to the show so, I’m guessing I got a pair of comp tickets from the newspaper I wrote the article for, because I actually took a friend with me. And knowing me, I wouldn’t have invited anyone unless I had an extra ticket.

One thing I definitely didn’t have were any backstage passes. However, that didn’t stop me from finding a way backstage to meet Monica in person. If you know me, this may not be that surprising to you. But I was always shocked when and if I could make it happen. I used the article I wrote as my way in. Before the concert, I had taken the time to get the article laminated because I really wanted it to be signed by Monica. Right before her concert ended, I made my way to where the backstage entrance was. Once I got there, I asked security if they could take my article backstage and ask Monica if she would be willing to autograph it for me. Security agreed to ask and took my article backstage while I waited patiently at the doorway. When security returned he said Monica wants you to come backstage. What?! All I wanted was an autograph and I ended up with an invitation! I was floored!

monica-2.JPG

When I got backstage, Monica immediately recognized my face. We took a few photos together and she autographed my article. Before I left, I thanked Monica for her kindness. On my way out, I passed right by Michelle Williams, one of Monica’s back up singers. If I had known then that she would soon become the third and final member of the supergroup Destiny’s Child, I would have stopped and asked for a picture with her too. I did eventually meet and interview her a few times, but that’s another blog ;)

I only heard that Monica was coming to town one time in a passing radio advertisement. If I had entertained one negative thought, I could have lessened my chance of getting the interview with her and completely defeated myself. Don’t dismiss ideas just because they seem impossible. Always remember - positive thinking equals positive action. I had nothing but positive thoughts during this process and as a result, was on the phone interviewing Monica in a matter of days. One positive thought turned into two articles published in two newspapers in two different states. One even appeared on the front page of the entertainment section. I later found out from Monica that her press on tour had been overshadowed by some of the popular boy bands that were performing on tour with her. So, my article actually served as a press highlight for her. Imagine that!

monicaarticle.jpg

Years later when I moved to LA, I actually saw Monica again while I was working at The Tyra Banks Show. If I had not had my previous experience with Monica, I probably would have not approached her. That kind of stuff was also frowned upon at my job, but since I had met and interviewed her before, I threw caution to the wind and walked right up to Monica. I quickly re-introduced myself to her and reminded her of our previous connection. She seemed to vaguely remember me.

When I told her that I now worked for The Tyra Banks Show, she shared that she had recently been trying to get booked on the show. I knew everyone in the booking department so I was like, '“I don’t know why you haven’t been booked, who doesn’t love Monica?” She then asked if I would exchange contact info with her manager so that I could help make that happen.. I loved Monica so of course, I was all in. It’s crazy how one minute you’re just saying hello and the next minute you’re in the process of trying to help someone get booked on a show. But that’s the entertainment industry.

Later that same day when I was getting off work, I actually saw Monica again. This time she had her eldest son, Rocco with her. My best friend Tam, who showed up at this exact moment, just so happened to have a camera with her. Or maybe I asked her to rush to her car and get her camera lol! My memory fails me right now, but either way I definitely asked Monica for a picture. It’s awesome looking back at the photo because Monica’s son Rocco was a toddler at the time but now he is a whole teenager. Time flies.

monicarocco.jpg

My only other Mo Moment happened way before anything I’ve already mentioned. However, I just found out about month ago that it did! Let me explain. Recently, Monica put out a mini documentary entitled, The Story of Miss Thang, Part 1 - “Southside.” In the first part of the documentary at the 4:11 mark, there is a picture of me with Monica, my college friend and Civil Rights icon Andrew Young. I had no idea that this was there until I got a few messages from fellow Whitney fans who saw me in the documentary. I went straight to YouTube to confirm what they were referring to and they were right! There I was standing with Monica as she told the story of sneaking backstage because she wanted to sing for Whitney at the “Olympic Flag Jam,” which Whitney Houston co-hosted with Dick Clark back in 1992.

What is crazy about her story is how much it mirrored mine. My friends and I snuck backstage at that same event to get next to Whitney. I didn’t want to sing for her like Monica, but I was back there to meet her. You can read all about my crazy backstage adventure in my last blog about Robyn Crawford.

So, all these years, I have had a copy of the same picture that Monica shared in her documentary. The only difference is that it was from a different angle. Whenever I would look at the photo, I would always ask myself, now who is that girl in the pink? Now I know! It would have been so cool had I known this when I met her in my hometown. I could have shown her the picture and everything. But obviously it wasn’t meant to go that way. It was actually more fun to find out the way that I did. I was mind blown. If I ever get the chance to meet or interview her again, I’m definitely bringing it up.

The bottom left pic is my picture and the one above is it is from Monica’s documentary. The top two pics on the right hand side of Whitney are from Monica’s documentary and the last one of Whitney is the one I took of her because I was too scared to…

The bottom left pic is my picture and the one above is it is from Monica’s documentary. The top two pics on the right hand side of Whitney are from Monica’s documentary and the last one of Whitney is the one I took of her because I was too scared to ask her for a pic..lol!

When you have a thought pop into your head or a goal you would like to reach, state it out loud and write it down to make it real. Next feed it with positive energy and water it with words of encouragement. Get used to saying, “Yes I can make this happen” instead of “that will never work.” Then roll up your sleeves and put your best efforts to seeing whatever it is from the beginning to end. Sit back, watch it grow and marvel at how what you claimed would happen…happen.

monica autograph.jpg

This is the formula I have used over and over again and it has lead to success, which includes my interview with Monica. One minute it was an idea, the next I was on the phone interviewing her. I’m not saying it happens that quick all the time, but if you hang in there and stay steadfast it will come to pass. I’m living proof! Now go manifest your thoughts into things!

Screen Shot 2019-11-18 at 11.56.12 AM.png

I had such a great time sitting down with the multi-talented actress Mara Hall for a Studio Q interview. We discussed the debut of her character, Darcia Lancaster, on the new hit TV series, “Ambitions,” which airs every Tuesday at 10/9C on OWN. "Ambitions" is a multigenerational family saga that explores love, power and politics in Atlanta. The series centers around the intense rivalry between formidable legal eagles Stephanie Lancaster (Robin Givens) and Amara Hughes (Essence Atkins), former best friends from college who find themselves adversaries in both their personal and professional lives. Mara portrays ‘Darcia Lancaster,’ a mysterious relative that comes into town in the middle of chaos, with unclear intentions.

Check out my interview with Mara below. Not only was she funny and transparent, but she shared noteworthy advice about the industry that you don’t want to miss. Watch below!

Whitney Houston's Estate Plans Hologram Tour and New Album 7 Years After Her Death

According to The Jasminebrand, for those who wish they could have had the chance to see iconic singer Whitney Houston perform live before she passed in 2012, that chance is coming. The “I Will Always Love You” singer’s estate has inked a new deal with Primary Wave Music Publishing, a boutique music company, specializing in the marketing of classic artists’ catalog. Some of their clientele include Bob Marley, Smokey Robinson, and Def Leppard. Their first massive project for Whitney is a hologram tour.

The show will feature Whitney Houston’s image and voice as a hologram, performing her classics backed by her original band and backup singers, including her brother Gary Houston. Whitney Houston’s longtime manager and sister-in-law, Pat Houston, says the estate is finally ready to feed the singer’s fans with new ways to honor her legacy while re-polishing her image. Pat told the New York Times:

“Before she passed, there was so much negativity around the name; it wasn’t about the music anymore. People had forgotten how great she was. They let all the personal things about her life outweigh why they fell in love with her in the first place.”

Primary Wave founder, Larry Mestel, added:

“Whitney was America’s sweetheart, and the idea now is to remind people that that is what her legacy is.

Pat says that as the executor of the estate, she has turned down several deals pitched for Whitney after her death, including a traveling museum. She said:

“Everything is about timing for me. It’s been quite emotional for the past seven years. But now it’s about being strategic.”

She also reveals the reason Whitney Houston never wanted to be included in the Hollywood Walk of Fame:

“[Whitney] didn’t want people walking on her name.”

Primary Wave is organizing many upcoming Whitney Houston projects, including a Broadway musical, and an album of unreleased music.

Would you attend a Whitney Houston hologram concert?

The 28th Anniversary of Divas Simply Singing!

On Sunday December 9, 2018, I attended the 28th Annual DIVAS Simply Singing! It is a musical AIDS Benefit concert and dinner fundraiser created and hosted by actress and activist Sheryl Lee Ralph. The concert is produced in conjunction with The DIVA Foundation to help raise money and awareness about HIV/AIDS. DIVAS Simply Singing! is the longest consecutive running musical AIDS benefit concert in the country, raising awareness and erasing stigma, one song at a time, to help and assist AIDS organizations in Los Angeles and around the world.

This evening of song and entertainment spotlights the talents of D.I.V.A. (acronym for Divinely Inspired, Victoriously Aware) individuals from all walks of show business.

Joining Sheryl Lee Ralph on stage was an all-star lineup, which included the incomparable Jenifer Lewis (Blackish), J’nai Bridges (The Metropolitan Opera), OurLady J (Golden Globe Nominated POSE), Media Queen, Ada Vox (American Idol Finalist), Renee Lawless (The Haves and the Have Nots), Elaine Gibbs, XFactor and the amazing Terrell Carter (Empire) wowed the house as the resident Divo for the evening. It is a fantastic event that I’ve had the amazing opportunity to cover many times. Check out some of my red carpet photos and interviews from the event above and below.

Behind The Photo: Phylicia Rashad

S3152806050148395600.jpg

When actress Phylicia Rashad came to my alma mater, Clark Atlanta University, to speak I knew I had to skip class to see her.  I made sure I was one of the first ones in the audience. I had loved Phylicia Rashad from her role on The Cosby Show and I was eager to hear what she had to say.  When I entered the auditorium, I went straight to the front row and sat down.  Good thing I came early, otherwise I wouldn't have been able to get a good seat.  Within minutes, the auditorium was filled with students.

It wasn't long afterwards that Phylicia Rashad was being introduced.  As soon as she finished her speech and opened the floor for questions, my hand shot up like a rocket.  Phylicia Rashad pointed to me to ask the very first question .  When I begin to ask my question she interrupted me and said, "Honey, you need to back to the microphone so everyone can hear your question." I turned around and looked at how far back the microphone was from where I was sitting and gave her a look of lazy desperation. I smiled and asked, "Can't I just ask you from right here?" Lord, why oh why did I say that to Phylicia Rashad?!

"Girl." She said.  "You better get up and go to that microphone.  You ought to be glad that you even got legs to walk."  Everyone immediately started laughing.  I suddenly felt like I was in a scene from the Cosby Show.  As instructed, I got up, put my head down, and slowly walked back to the microphone.  By the time I made it back there I had to get at the end of a long line of students who were also waiting to ask her a question.  When my turn finally came she said, "Ahh I see you made it. Everyone let's give Ms. Thing a hand for walking all the way back to the microphone."  Everyone roared with handclaps and laughter.  It was a very comical moment, at least for them it was.  If you ever watched one episode of The Cosby Show you knew not to mess with Claire Huxtable but that day I learned that goes for Phylicia Rashad too lol! Even though I skipped class that day I still learned a lesson and got scolded by a famous TV mom.

Why Texting is The Lazy Way of Connecting with Your Loved Ones

8814.jpg

We live in a world where social media rules as the way to connect. Because people over share every minute of their day you can feel like you really know someone you have never met. But what about the people you do know?  The ones that you care about and are a part of your inner circle. How do you communicate with them?  Most of us use the same ways we connect with a stranger to connect with our precious loved ones. If it's not through social media, it's almost always a text or an email but very rarely is it an actual phone call.  Let me just be blunt, texting is the lazy path to connect with the ones you love.  Texting someone is not the same as calling and FaceTiming is not the same as visiting them in person.

Discover & share this Identity GIF with everyone you know. GIPHY is how you search, share, discover, and create GIFs.

Texting and emailing require the least amount of effort in a relationship of any kind, so the fact that we have collectively chosen to communicate mostly through that way makes me sad and mad at the same time. Sad because some people really think they are connecting in a deep way via text and mad because people want you to receive a text like it was a huge effort on their part. It is not. What a text tells me is that you don’t value me as much as I thought you did. You have taken the path of least resistance.  It does not deepen our relationship and there is almost always an opportunity to misinterpret someone’s tone, which can lead to taking well-meaning messages completely the wrong way.   If we are cool and I’ve never mentioned this to you please forgive me for allowing you to think that texting me was a form of communication that made me feel really connected to you, and super valued in your world.  It does not.

Discover & share this Whitney Houston GIF with everyone you know. GIPHY is how you search, share, discover, and create GIFs.

In this day and age, I understand I may be an anomaly with this one, but I’m okay with that. If texting or emailing is your primary form of communication with the people you care about and they feel it speaks volumes of love, value and connection for them as it does for you, stop reading now. But if you’re anything like me and it conveys that you are not worth a real effort to the other person please keep reading and start requiring more. Ask the other person for what you really want and what you really need to feel valued in the relationship and not just what is easy and convenient for them.

Now I’m not saying that texts or emails mean nothing, but when that is how you communicate 90 percent of the time you are in a relationship of diminishing returns. People text, email, inbox and DM strangers on Instagram all day every day, so tell me how is it special when they do it to you? It isn’t.

GIFs from our Evite's DIY, recipe or original series videos. Also, from our Facebook live show, #EviteIRL and invitation designs.

And group texts are the absolute worst. You’re telling me you feel the exact same way about everyone in the group and what you tell the one you can tell all?  I think not. There’s usually one core person that binds the rest of the group together, however, people carry on like the closeness is the same with everyone in the group when it is so the opposite. It’s just an easy way to stay connected with people you are unwilling to put in one on one time with. Make no mistake about it, if you feel only having a text-based relationship with someone reduces your value; imagine that same person making you a part of a group text.  Whether anyone says it or not most of the group is only interested in a few people on the list and could utterly give two shits about everybody else.

This really shows its ugly head when your phone keeps buzzing with responses from people you have never met because someone has added you to a group text or a Facebook group without your knowledge. In these cases, we make no bones about exiting stage left and getting out but anything less than that we suffer quietly without saying a word.  Now if you love group texts and are super close to everybody in your group then, of course, I’m not talking to you. I’m talking to the folks who are in groups and want to get out.

At least Facebook gives you the option to leave with the ability to never be asked back again.   However, if you are in a group text you have to actually voice to someone that you want out. And nobody's really doing that. They just chime in when necessary or become that group member who never responds to anything. Now I do believe group texts can sometimes be helpful like when it comes to logistical things such as a time change or new venue location, planning a brunch date or a girls trip that everybody really wants to go on.  But just to be grouped together with everybody whom I feel varying levels of intimacy with is not special to me at all. It feels more like being in a town hall meeting where people give their opinions about random stuff I could care less about.  I feel it’s a lazy way to connect and impersonal at best. But just like anything else in life, if it works for you and your peoples, ignore me, and carry on.

I feel special when people I care about put forth an effort to call, connect and share something of value with me.  When they FaceTime me because hearing my voice is just not enough when they are away from me, or sending me a thoughtful gift to communicate what I mean to them.  And the absolute ultimate, hold on, wait for it...to actually get in a car or take a flight to visit me because technology and gifts just won’t do it for them anymore.

Discover & share this Reaction GIF with everyone you know. GIPHY is how you search, share, discover, and create GIFs.

I know for some people in this generation texting and using social media will suffice just fine. They are happy if you just respond to them with an emoji whether it is individually or in a group.  That will never be enough for me. No text or email will ever replace someone actually picking up the phone to call me or getting in their car to come see me or FaceTiming me because they are far away and my voice is just not enough.

We allow people to be their most lazy self with us and then wonder why we are not fulfilled in our relationships. People send you a one-line text and act like they really connected with you. Puh-lease, I feel more connected to my Twitter followers or YouTube subscribers who respond positively to a thought I shared or a video I worked hard to create and upload.

If you love someone and all you are doing is texting, inboxing, dm’ing or shouting him or her out in a group text please step your game up. But hey, I’m self-aware enough to realize I’m not the average bear and it’s also 2018.  So if texting, inboxing, dm’ing or group texting the people you care about sincerely meets all their needs and works best for you just go ahead and disregard everything I wrote. This is specifically for those of us who need to require more to feel valued by the people we care about.  I know typing behind a keyboard may be more comfortable for you, but know that as human beings we are equipped to do more. So, stop being lazy, and put in some real effort to communicate beyond your phone or inbox.

Conveying real value to the ones you love will always pay off in the end.  And this rant is not exclusive to any particular type of relationship. This lazy way of connecting has affected us all, be it a parent, a child, a friend, a marriage or a lover. Do more. The dividends will upgrade your relationship to the one you actually deserve instead of the one you are currently settling for.

So until my next rant, I must now stop typing, put my phone down and actually go engage face to face with someone I care about.

The Best of Studio Q in 2017 - A Year in Review

Tony Rock Interview

This+One.png

My top Studio Q moment of 2017 was interviewing Tony Rock about being the host of TV ONE's new show, "The Game of Dating." During my interview, I asked Tony what he thought about Steve Harvey's meeting with Donald Trump. Tony did not hold back one bit. His answer made this clip go viral! Watch below.

My interview clip with Tony was viewed by over 2 million people on Facebook, by hundreds of thousands of people on Instagram, and became the headline of countless blog posts and radio show segments.   It even made it into the conversation on The Breakfast Club and Dish Nation.

Tony had me laughing non-stop. He was so entertaining that I think the entire interview should have went viral.  If you want to get your life please press play and watch our entire conversation below!

Jenifer Lewis Interview

Quencie and Jenifer Lewis at her home in LA

Quencie and Jenifer Lewis at her home in LA

In December I sat down for a one-on-one interview with Jenifer Lewis in her wonderful home to discuss her new book, The Mother of Black Hollywood.  The last time I interviewed this treasured diva was back in 2012 in the backyard of her Hollywood mansion by the pool.  It was one of my best Studio Q interviews to date, so I was not sure if we could top that moment in time.

But leave it to the great Jenifer Lewis to always out do herself. She always gives 2,000 % percent and this interview was no different. I had the time of my life with her and it was a great way to close out the year.  This interview was so good that it served as an early Christmas present for me.   We discussed her acting career, including starring on "Black-ish," being sexually assaulted, how she dealt with a scam artist, being bipolar, advice to the millennials and so many other things.  She even invited me and Tam (my Producer and best friend) to sing "In These Streets" with her at the piano. The initial song went viral and was sang by Jenifer, Brandy and Roz Ryan. Watch our attempt to sing along with Jenifer Lewis. It was not pretty but it was oh so much fun! Later, scroll down to watch my amazing interview with this legend.

The Bodyguard Musical Starring

Deborah Cox

Screen Shot 2017-12-28 at 8.41.00 PM.png

In May of 2017, I covered LA's premiere of the hit musical, THE BODYGUARD at The Hollywood Pantages theater.  It is an award–winning musical based on the smash–hit film of the same name. Who could forget Kevin Coster as Frank Farmer, the former Secret Service agent turned bodyguard hired to protect superstar Rachel Marron, played by the late great Whitney Houston? It was Whitney's first film, so I was super excited to see this show and so was a lot of Hollywood! Stars who came out included, Angela Bassett, Loni Love, Erica Cash, Erica Campbell, Bill Bellamy and Loretta Devine.

Grammy® Award-nominated and multi-platinum R&B/pop recording artist and film/TV actress Deborah Cox stars as Rachel Marron. In the role of the bodyguard Frank Farmer, is television star Judson Mills. I am such a huge Whitney Houston fan so I am very biased when it comes to other people singing her songs, but as soon as Deborah Cox opened her mouth - I was sold! Based on Lawrence Kasdan’s 1992 Oscar nominated Warner Bros. film, and adapted by Academy Award-winner (BirdmanAlexander DinelarisTHE BODYGUARD featured songs recorded by Whitney Houston including: One Moment in TimeI Have NothingI Wanna Dance with Somebody, Saving All My Love, Run to You, So Emotional and her cover version of Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You.  What I loved most about this show is that Deborah Cox was not trying to be Whitney Houston.  She made the songs her own all while celebrating Whitney at the same time. If you love Whitney Houston, then this was a MUST-SEE! If you love the film, The Bodyguard then you are going to like how they adapted it to the stage. And if you are a Deborah Cox fan, you will be in heaven from beginning to end. You will find yourself singing along and celebrating Whitney in a positive way. Watch my red carpet interviews below.

This was my first time at the Avalon Hollywood and I absolutely loved the ambience. The show was so much fun and featured incredible performances from Snoop Dogg, Da Brat, Naughty by Nature and T-Boz who also sang 'Unpretty' with her daughter Chase.  Funds from the event will support The MLK Sickle Cell Outreach Center of Los Angeles and The Sickle Cell Support Group of Atlanta.  Check out my red carpet interviews below.

Bobbi Kristina Movie on TV One

In October I had a great time interviewing Joy Rovaris who starred as Bobbi Kristina and Nadji Jeter who played Nick Gordon from TV One's movie, Bobbi Kristina. The story delves into Bobbi Kristina's struggle to come to terms with her mother's sudden departure as well as the complexities of her own life. Opposite Joy Rovaris, Bobbi Kristina stars Demetria McKinney who embodies the heart, flair and essence of the legendary Whitney Houston. The film also stars Hassan Johnson as Bobby Brown, and Vivica A. Fox as Pat Houston.  It was directed by child actor Ty Hodges and Executive Produced by Tracey Baker Simmons and Wanda Shelley, who were the creators of the docu-series Being Bobby Brown and The Houstons

I sat down with comedian Maronzio Vance and discussed his co-starring role on the 2nd season of George Lopez's show "Lopez" which premiered in March on TV Land.  Maronzio Vance is a writer, actor, and comedian noted for his comedic timing in his roles for television shows. Kiyanna Simone Interview

static1.squarespace.png

In May I did a Skype interview with actress Kyanna Simone Simpson who played the younger version of Oprah Winfrey's character in the biopic surrounding Henrietta Lacks life called The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks on HBO. The film tells the true story of Henrietta Lacks, an African-American woman whose cells were used to create the first immortal human cell line. Told through the eyes of her daughter, Deborah Lacks (Oprah Winfrey), the film chronicles her search to learn about the mother she never knew and to understand how the unauthorized harvesting of Lacks’ cancerous cells in 1951 led to unprecedented medical breakthroughs, changing countless lives and the face of medicine forever.

I had so much fun talking to Kyanna about her career, her mentor Latanya Richardson Jackson and what it was like to meet and work with Oprah Winfrey, which was a dream come true for her.  This budding actress who is known for her recurring role on HBO’s miniseries Show Me a Hero is currently working on the film, White Boy Rick starring Matthew McConaughey.

I sat down for a one-on-one interview with Jenifer Lewis in her wonderful home to discuss her new book, The Mother of Black Hollywood. In her book, Jenifer discusses her acting career, including starring on "Black-ish," being sexually assaulted, how she dealt with a scam artist, being bipolar, advice to the millennials and many other things.

Growing up in Kinloch, MO, Jenifer knew that she was destined for fame. She headed to New York and pursued a career on Broadway, and since then, she has starred in a number of television shows and movies, including What's Love Got to Do With It, The Preacher's Wife, Jackie's Back, Meet the Browns and Disney's The Princess and the Frog. Definitely known as everybody's mother in movies, the title of her memoir is befitting. She's played everybody's mama from Whitney Houston in "The Preacher's Wife," Tina Turner's (Angela Bassett) mama in "What's Love Got to Do With it, to playing Tupac's mama in "Poetic Justice."
